Three Chargers named to CSC Men's Tennis Academic All-District Team

2022-23 CSC Academic All-District Teams

The Hillsdale College men's tennis program put together another solid season on the court, posting a winning record, finishing second in the G-MAC regular season standings, and making its fifth-straight semifinal trip in the G-MAC Tournament.

Success on the court was matched by success off it in 2022-23, as the Chargers also have placed three individuals on the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District team for men's tennis -- Sean Barstow, Brennan Cimpeanu and Tyler Conrad.

In order to be considered for CSC Academic All-District honors, an athlete must be either a starter or a meaningful contributor, and carry a 3.5 or better cumulative GPA. All Academic All-District honorees are entered into consideration to receive prestigious Academic All-American honors from CSC later in May, as voted on and selected by institution SIDs at the NCAA DII level. This is the first season in the 65-plus year history of the CSC Academic awards that men's and women's tennis players have been honored in their own separate category.

Barstow was a strong player for the Chargers in 2022-23, moving throughout the lineup as needed and playing successfully wherever he saw the court, posting a 19-6 singles record and a 16-13 record in doubles. The junior earned second team All-G-MAC honors, his third consecutive All-G-MAC honor in three years of eligibility, and was a G-MAC Player of the Week during the season. The 2021 ITA Midwest Regional runner-up in doubles with partner Brennan Cimpeanu, Barstow also played in the 2022 ITA Cup in doubles with Cimpeanu, the second-straight season he earned the right to participate in the de facto individual national championships at the NCAA DII level.

Off the court, Barstow is a three-time ITA Scholar Athlete and three-time Academic All-G-MAC honoree who has consistently posted one of the best GPAs in the men's tennis team while pursuing a degree in accounting.

In three years at Hillsdale, Cimpeanu put together a legendary career for the Chargers, finishing with 103 wins, including a 21-11 record at No. 1 singles and a 16-11 record at No. 1 doubles in 2022-23. A 2021-22 ITA All-American, the only player in program history to achieve that honor, Cimpeanu is also a three-time All-G-MAC First Team honoree, and was the 2021 ITA Midwest Regional singles champion, and doubles runner-up while partnering with Sean Barstow. He played in two ITA Cups in his career at Hillsdale, with a top finish of seventh in the nation at the NCAA DII level in singles at the 2021 ITA Cup. A key part of the lineup from his first day with the team, Cimpeanu also was the 2020-21 G-MAC Freshman of the Year.

As a student, Cimpeanu also put together an impressive resume, being named an ITA Scholar-Athlete and Academic All-G-MAC three consecutive years, as well as serving as the Hillsdale Student-Athlete Advisory Council President and the Hillsdale International Club vice president. He's graduating from Hillsdale in three years and is headed to Michigan State University in the fall to pursue an MBA from their nationally ranked program.

Conrad, meanwhile, has been a rock for the Chargers men's tennis program and a key part of the lineup for four seasons, and will return for a fifth year this fall. He has 101 career wins and went 14-13 in singles and 13-11 in doubles in 2022-23 while playing high in the lineup for Hillsdale.

A three-time first-team All-G-MAC player and a five-time recipient of G-MAC Player of the Week honors as well, Conrad also has excelled in the classroom, serving as a three-time ITA Scholar-Athlete and three-time Academic All-G-MAC honoree, as well as the Scholarship Chairman for Hillsdale's Alpha Tau Omega fraternity, an Executive Board Member of Hillsdale Praxis, and the vice president of the Hillsdale College Student-Athlete Advisory Council.

As All-District honorees, all three players are under consideration for CoSIDA Academic All-American honors. A team of All-Americans will be chosen from the All-District winners and the selections will be announced on May 31.
