Chargers place four on G-MAC All-Conference teams

Chargers place four on G-MAC All-Conference teams

The Hillsdale College men's tennis team earned the second seed and a first-round bye in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference tournament this weekend -- and with that performance, also comes a full slate of recognition on the G-MAC's All-Conference lists.

Four Chargers earned All-G-MAC honors, the conference announced on Thursday morning, as Hillsdale tied G-MAC regular season champion Tiffin for the most total honorees recognized.

Two decorated players led the Chargers in terms of honors in 2022-23 as junior Brennan Cimpeanu and senior Tyler Conrad each earned first-team All-G-MAC honors for the third consecutive season.

One of the top players in the G-MAC and the Midwest Region since he first stepped on the court at Hillsdale and became the G-MAC Freshman of the Year in 2020-21, Cimpeanu posted a 4-1 record at No. 1 singles in conference play in 2022-23, and a 20-11 record overall while reaching his 100th career victory in just three seasons. Brennan also finished with a 4-1 doubles record at No. 1 doubles with multiple partners, and a 15-11 record in doubles overall.

Conrad, meanwhile, has been a rock in the lineup for Hillsdale all four seasons, and 2022-23 is no different. Playing throughout the lineup at anywhere from No. 1 to No. 4 singles depending on where Hillsdale needed him, Conrad posted a 4-1 singles record in conference play and a 14-12 record overall, while also playing at all three doubles positions at different points and posting a 4-1 record in conference play and 12-11 overall. Conrad also reached 100 wins for his career this past weekend, and will return for a fifth year in 2023-24 to help lead the Chargers again.

Two more Chargers earned second-team honors, as senior Brian Hackman finished an illustrious career with his second All-Conference honor, and junior Sean Barstow continued his legacy with a third-straight All-Conference mark.

Hackman, playing in a fifth season with the Chargers, played at No. 2, 3 and 4 singles at different points in the season for the Chargers, and went 2-3 in singles in G-MAC play, and 10-9 overall. He excelled at No. 1 and 2 doubles for Hillsdale, posting a 4-1 record in G-MAC play and a 14-8 record overall to help the Chargers claim the bye in the G-MAC Tourney. Hackman was the third Charger to reach 100 wins for his career this season as well.

Barstow, meanwhile, was a model of consistency on the back-end of the singles lineup for Hillsdale, playing at 3, 4, 5 and 6 singles and going a perfect 6-0 in G-MAC play, and 19-5 overall. He also was huge for the Chargers at 1 and 2 doubles, posting a 5-1 G-MAC record and a 15-13 record overall to earn his third All-G-MAC honor.

Hillsdale is looking to reclaim the G-MAC Tournament crown it last won in 2021 this weekend. As the second seed in the tournament, hosted in Owensboro, Kentucky, the Chargers received an automatic berth in the semifinals and will play the winner of Walsh and Ashland at 2 p.m. on Friday for a spot in the championship match on Saturday afternoon.
