Hackman reaches career milestone as Hillsdale beats Cedarville, 7-0

Hillsdale College men's tennis senior Brian Hackman reached a memorable milestone for his career on Friday afternoon as Hillsdale swept past visiting Cedarville, 7-0, in its first home match outdoors in 2023.

With a 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles over the Yellow Jackets alongside partner Nik Wastcoat, Hackman won his 100th match as a Charger, becoming the latest Hillsdale men's tennis player to join an exclusive club, and the first to reach the milestone since Charlie Andrews in 2018-19.

Hackman added win number 101 just a short time later with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Cedarville's Abraham Hougland at No. 3 singles, helping to complete a clean Chargers sweep of all nine contested matches.

Hillsdale picked up a critical G-MAC win over the Yellow Jackets despite resting Brennan Cimpeanu, the usual top player in Hillsdale's singles lineup and part of the team's top doubles pairing. In his absence in doubles, senior Tyler Conrad and junior Sean Barstow teamed up for a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles to keep the Chargers from missing a beat, while freshman Aidan Pack and junior Daniel Gilbert took a 6-2 victory at No. 3 doubles to help Hillsdale sweep to the doubles point.

Playing up in the lineup in singles, Conrad took care of business against against Cedarville's Toshi Watanabe at No. 1 singles, winning a third-set tiebreak 10-5 after the two players split the first two sets.

Pack also rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Cedarville's Nathan Brumbaugh at No. 2 singles, Barstow blanked the Yellow Jackets' Jacob Durham 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles, and Gilbert took a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Ryan Mecurio of Cedarville at No. 5 singles.

Wastcoat completed the sweep for the Chargers with a 6-0,6-2 victory over Xavier Gee at No. 6 singles as well for Hillsdale.

While Hackman is the first Hillsdale player to join the 100 win club in four years, he'll have more company soon, as both Cimpeanu and Conrad are also rapidly closing in on 100 wins for the Chargers as well.

The Chargers are now 3-1 in G-MAC play and 11-6 overall, and are moving closer to locking up a top four seed in the upcoming G-MAC Tournament. Hillsdale has another critical conference match at home tomorrow, Saturday, at noon against another contender for a top four spot, Ashland.
