Chargers' Brennan Cimpeanu earns second G-MAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week honor (Sept. 26-Oct.3)

Hillsdale College junior Brennan Cimpeanu wrapped up the fall portion of the Charger men's tennis team's 2022-23 schedule the way he began it -- with G-MAC Player of the Week honors.

The conference office announced on Monday afternoon that Cimpeanu had been named the G-MAC men's tennis Player of the Week for the second time this fall, and the seventh time in his career, after an impressive showing at the Northwood Tennis Invite over the past weekend.

Cimpeanu went a perfect 3-0 in singles play without dropping a set, defeating both Northwood No. 1 singles player Leon Grundstrom (6-3, 6-4) and Walsh's Philip Peter Carstensen (7-6 (5), 6-2) in the process. The junior also posted a perfect record in doubles, partnering with fellow junior Sean Barstow to take an 8-6 win over Northwood's top team of Grundstrom and Max Wild, and an 8-2 win over Walsh's top team of Carstensen and Ethan Milgan.

It's a perfect ending to a strong fall for Cimpeanu, who earned All-American honors from the ITA in 2021-22 as a sophomore. The junior went 10-1 in singles play, with his only loss coming in the ITA Midwest Regional to the top-seeded player in the bracket, Wayne State's Dom Spicer. Cimpeanu also went 6-2 playing in doubles with Barstow, as the duo who were nationally ranked last season continue to be a strong pairing for the Chargers as well.

The junior is now 43-9 for his collegiate singles career, and 39-18 in doubles heading into the spring campaign beginning in February. Cimpeanu will look to lead the Chargers back to a G-MAC crown two years after winning the title in 2020-21, and a season after coming up short last spring. Hillsdale's first match of the spring is at home against Cornerstone on Feb. 4.
