Chargers' Brennan Cimpeanu named G-MAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week (Sept. 5-12)

Brennan Cimpeanu had a season to remember in 2021-22.

In his first event of the 2022-23 season, the Hillsdale College men's tennis team's junior leader picked up right where he left off.

Cimpeanu was undefeated in singles play at the Charger men's tennis invitational over the weekend, adeptly defending his home court. His performance didn't go unnoticed, as the Great Midwest Athletic Conference named him the G-MAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week on Monday afternoon.

It's the sixth time Cimpeanu has been recognized by the G-MAC in his career, and it's another honor to add to the list for the 2021-22 ITA All-American.

Cimpeanu went 3-0 in the A Draw Singles competition at the Charger Invite, beating Findlay's Wilfredo Lara 6-3, 6-2, Tiffin's Maxime Navrotchi 6-1, 1-6, 10-6 and Wayne St's Daniel Grey 4-6, 7-6 (5), 10-6 to reach the finals of the bracket and earn the tournament co-championship.

The junior also competed in doubles for the Chargers, partnering with teammate Sean Barstow and going 1-1, with a 9-7 victory over Tiffin's team of Ruben Fonga and Matthew Weaver.

Cimpeanu is looking to build off a historic 2021-22 season this year, after finishing last year ranked 15th in the nation in singles at the NCAA DII level and becoming the Chargers' first NCAA DII men's tennis All-American in program history.

The Chargers now head to the ITA Midwest Regional hosted this weekend in Indianapolis, where Cimpeanu will attempt to recapture the magic of his 2021 Midwest Regional title run in singles last season, even with an extremely tough field gunning for him as the favorite to take home the 2022 crown. A victory, or a sufficiently strong performance, would allow Cimpeanu to return to Rome, Georgia in October to compete in the ITA Cup for the second straight season.
