Charger men's golf kicks off spring with 13th-place finish at tough St. Leo Invite

The Hillsdale College men's golf team kicked off the spring portion of its 2020-21 schedule in Florida on Monday and Tuesday, going toe-to-toe with one of the toughest fields it's seen this season.

Facing a stacked set of opponents in the St. Leo Invitational, played at Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club in Dade City, Florida, the Chargers struggled to find consistency over the course of the three rounds, ultimately finishing in 13th place in an event that included five teams in the top 25 of the most recent Golfstat.com poll.

Senior Ryan Zetwick bounced back from an opening-round 75 to play two-under golf for the final two days and lead Hillsdale in the invitational, shooting 70 and 72 to finish with a one-over 217 and tie for 38th overall.

Senior George Roberts was close behind Zetwick, carding an opening round 69 and finishing two-over for the invitational with a score of 218 and tying for 41st, while sophomore Gerry Jones Jr. overcame a second-day round of 80 with the best round shot by a Charger in the invitational, a four-under 68, in the final round to finish tied for 50th with a four-over 220.

Junior Josh Davenport finished tied for 60th, shooting a 74-75-74-223, to round out Hillsdale's scoring golfers, and freshman Will Verduzco finished tied for 66th in just his second collegiate appearance, shooting a 73-77-74-224.

Hillsdale is off for the next two weeks before heading west to Las Vegas, Nevada to play in the Desert Classic hosted by Royal Links Golf Club. The Chargers will look to build off an up-and-down experience in Dade City and have more succeess in an invitational that will contain several Midwest regional teams.
