The old-fashioned trope is "good things come to those who wait." Josh Davenport had to wait a little longer for his trophy, but it was worth it.
Davenport, a sophomore on the Charger golf team, took home medalist honors in a playoff hole at the Midwest Regional, held at the Fox Run Golf Club in Eureka, Missouri.
He finished in a four-way tie for first in the three-round event with a score of 214. That quagmire required a playoff hole, which Davenport won, thus earning the trophy at one of the signature events on the fall schedule for all teams in the region.
Davenport put himself in position to capture medalist honors thanks to an outstanding second round, where he fired a 67, the second-lowest score in any round by any Hillsdale College golfer since the program was reinstituted in 2014. He bracketed that score with rounds of 73 and 74, finishing with a 214 for the two-day event.
The victory adds another significant accomplishment for a golfer who is quickly building a remarkable athletic resume in one year and change with Hillsdale. Davenport was the 2019 G-MAC Freshman of the Year and was a key part of the Chargers qualifying for the Midwest Regional for the first time last spring.
As a team, Hillsdale placed eighth in the 18-team event in Missouri with a total score of 903.
Freshman Gerry Jones Jr. took second on the team with a three-round score of 226, playing consistent golf throughout with scores of 74, 75 and 77.
Ryan Zetwick was third on the team with a 76-76-77--229. George Roberts was fourth on the team with a 234, while Logan Anuszkiewicz rounded out Hillsdale's score with a 266.
Another group of golfers participated at the Kyle Ryman Memorial, hosted by Tiffin University. That Charger team placed 10th of 15 participating teams.
Jedd Thomas took first on the team with a three-round score of 228. He was followed by Jack Rowe (233), Drew Gandy (241) and Tanner Motske (249).
