As part of National Signing Day 2020, the Hillsdale College football program is proud to welcome 27 new players to the program, joining Team 128.
The complete list of Signing Day additions appears below. Chargers head coach Keith Otterbein expects to add to this initial list of 27 throughout the spring.
A number of local prospects highlight Hillsdale's 2020 recruiting class. Brothers Nick and Ben Affholter from Reading High School, located in Hillsdale County, are two members of this class. They are fresh off claiming a state championship for the Rangers, and are cousins of current Charger players Martin Petersen and Shannon Petersen.
Additional players with Hillsdale ties include Isaac TeSlaa and Nicholas Broome, whose fathers played for the Chargers in the 1990s. Riley Tolsma is the younger brother of former Charger women's track standout Rachael Tolsma.
This year's class has an average high school grade point average of 4.1, keeping with the high academic standards Otterbein and his staff are intent on pursuing with their recruiting.
"Our players have been improving in the classroom continuously over the past several years, something we take a great deal of pride in,"Otterbein said. "In addition, we feel like this year's class is full of really taalented football players."
The Chargers have put together three winning seasons in their three years as members of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference. In 2019, Hillsdale had three All-Americans on the roster and three players - Luke Keller, Drake Temple and Mark Konkle - winning individual G-MAC awards.
The 2020 season begins at home for the Chargers on Saturday, Sept. 5 against Northwood University. Homecoming is scheduled for the following week, Saturday, Sept. 12, against the University of Indianapolis.
