Charger Football Season Preview: Offense

Charger Football Season Preview: Offense

TEAM126 PREVIEW

Unit: Offense

Who It Includes: Quarterback, Running Back, Tight End, H-back, Offensive Line

Who We Lost: OL Jake Bull, OL Danny Drummond, OL Zach VanOrman, TE Austin Adams

Who We've Got Back: QB Chance Stewart, RB David Graham, RB Christian Shepler, RB Casey O'Brien, OL Drew Callahan, OL Mark Konkle, TE John Brennan, TE Martin Petersen, WR Trey Brock, WR Konnor Maloney

Overview: Few teams in Division II can bring back the level of experience at the skill positions the Chargers do. Stewart grabbed the starting QB spot midway through the 2015 season and hasn't looked back since. Over the past two seasons, Stewart has a 33-to-9 touchdown-to-interception ratio.

Brock, the program's second-leading all-time receiver, was also a starter in his freshman year of 2015 and returns for his fourth year as the team's top pass catcher. Sandusky enters his third year as a starter and is a multi-faceted threat from anywhere on the field. Maloney showed some deep-play ability as a true freshman last year, and his speed was on display during terrific indoor and outdoor track seasons for Hillsdale College. Maloney would provide the ideal complement to Brock and is likely to get some open looks,m for all the attention Brock figures to draw from opposing secondaries.

Petersen had an excellent spring, while Brennan is a field-stretching tight end who can create big plays.

Callahan and Konkle have moved to new positions, center and left tackle, respectively, to help make up for the loss of four-year starters Bull and Drummond. Newcomers to watch at this position include Tyler Scholl, Mitchell Albert, Nrandon Hill, Cole Johnson and Jacob Thompson.

Coach Otter: "With having so much skill position experience back, they 'get it' quicker. You still teach sequences to the whole unit, but you know you've got guys who have run your stuff successfully before. Our groups at quarterback, tailback, wide receiver and tight end are all up to speed.

"With the offensive line, we've moved a couple of guys around. (Mark) Konkle has moved to left tackle and (Drew) Callahan over to center. It's always a bit of musical chairs to get the five best guys out there at the same time, and we're counting on some younger guys to be in the mix at that position."
