Moynihan Earns GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week Honor

October 16, 2012 - As a team, the Hillsdale College football team has turned in one outstanding performance after another on defense all season. So it was only fitting that an individual on that defensive unit was recognized for his efforts.

Junior linebacker Devin Moynihan was named the GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week Tuesday afternoon. The award was chosen and announced by the conference office.

Moynihan is the second member of the Charger defense to earn the conference's weekly award this season, joining sophomore DB Daniel Pittman, who earned his own award following the team's win over Ohio Dominican on Sept. 8.

Hillsdale defeated Ferris State 30-20 in Big Rapids last weekend, thanks in large part to Moynihan's consistency and ability to make plays on defense. He led the team with 12 total tackles, and recovered two fumbles on the day. His second fumble recovery came with just under five minutes to play in the game and ended the Bulldogs' final offensive drive of the game.

In seven games this season, Moynihan has 56 total tackles, and is an important part of Hillsdale's conference-leading defense. The Chargers allow the fewest total yards per game (278) in the GLIAC and rank second in the NCAA Division II in passing yards allowed per game (147).

He is a native of Livonia, Mich. and played his high school football at Churchill High School.

Moynihan and the Chargers begin a two-game homestand this weekend by hosting Saginaw Valley State University at 1:30 p.m.
