David Toth earns first G-MAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week honors (Feb. 22-28)

David Toth earns first G-MAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week honors (Feb. 22-28)

There have been a lot of stand-out pitchers over the last 23 years of Charger baseball.

On Saturday, junior David Toth accomplished something that none of those pitchers ever did in their careers at Hillsdale College.

Toth went seven innings without giving up a single hit in a 1-0 win over Maryville on opening day of the 2021 baseball season, throwing the first no-hitter by a Charger pitcher since 1998, the first year full game-by-game statistical records are available for the program.

For his singular accomplishment, Toth also has been honored by the Great Midwest Athletic Conference, which named him G-MAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week this afternoon.

The junior from Grosse Pointe, Michigan needed just 86 pitches to get the complete game shutout victory over the Saints on Saturday, striking out 10 of the 22 batters he faced. Just one second-inning walk separated him from what would likely have been Hillsdale's first-ever perfect game in what was one of the best pitching displays in the 120-year history of the program.

While Saturday was Toth's best performance in a four-year career at Hillsdale to date, he's had an impact throughout his time with the Chargers. In 43 appearances, including eight starts, he's 7-9 with 103 strikeouts and a 4.68 ERA.

One of the program's highest-impact relievers early on in his career, Toth is second in Hillsdale history in single-season saves (10) and career saves (12). Arguably the only reason Toth won't challenge the program's saves record is his successful transition to becoming one of the team's top starters, a process that began last year in the Covid-19 shortened 2020 season.

Toth and the Chargers are back in action this weekend with a four-game series at Illinois-Springfield, beginning with a single game at 2 p.m. ET on Friday, March 5 and continuing with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. ET and a single game on Sunday at 2 p.m. ET.
