Cavs Take 2 From Chargers

Game 1 box score: Walsh 7, Hillsdale 6

Game 2 box score: Walsh 6, Hillsdale 1

The home run balls were flying for the Hillsdale College baseball team Thursday afternoon, but it wasn't quite enough to pick up wins on the road.

The Chargers dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Walsh University in North Canton 7-6 and 6-1. Hillsdale is now 16-21 overall and 11-11 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference. The teams will wrap up their four-game series starting at noon Friday.

In game one, the Cavs scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to complete a comeback win. In the second game, a Jake Hoover leadoff home run turned out to be the only run for the Chargers in a 6-1 loss. Walsh hit two two-run home runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to break open a close game.

Hillsdale is closing in on the G-MAC's single-season home run record after its display of power Thursday afternoon. The Chargers hit four home runs in the opener and one in the nightcap, giving them 56 for the season. The single-season conference record for home runs is 59, set by Kentucky Wesleyan last year.

Senior Steven Ring hit a two-run home run as part of a 2-for-4 effort in the opener. He drove in three runs, giving him 48 RBI on the season, and his 13 home runs continues to lead the G-MAC.

Christian Rodino, Rob Zurawski and Colin Boerst all hit solo home runs in the first game for Hillsdale.

Hillsdale was held to three hits in the second game, with Hoover's home run the highlight.
