Cardinals Quiet Charger Bats in Saturday Sweep

The Saginaw Valley State University baseball pitching staff held down the offense of the Hillsdale College Chargers in a Saturday afternoon GLIAC doubleheader.

Hillsdale scored just one run in the two games as SVSU defeated the Chargers by scores of 3-0 and 6-1 at University Center. The Chargers are now 13-25 overall and 8-14 in the GLIAC after the losses. The teams close out their four-game weekend series at SVSU starting at noon Sunday.

One player who was on target in game 1 was senior Nolan Breymaier, who went 3-for-3, all of them singles. Luke Ortel and Tad Sobieszczanski added hits in the opener. Hillsdale stranded nine runners on base in the first game. Junior Lucas Hamelink pitched all six innings and surrendered one earned run while striking out six.

In game 2, freshman pitcher Will Kruse went 7 1/3 innings while allowing just two earned runs. Four of the Cardinals' six runs were unearned.

Hillsdale's lone run came in the top of the ninth inning when Luke Ortel drew a two-out, bases-loaded walk that scored Breymaier. Ortel was 2-for-4 while Michael O'Sullivan was 2-for-5 in game 2.
