Baseball earns split in WHAC double header at LTU

(UTICA, Mixh.) – Concordia baseball traveled to Lawrence Tech on Tuesday afternoon as the team continued WHAC conference play. The Cardinals entered with a 28-14 overall record and an 8-6 conference mark while Lawrence Tech came in 30-12 overall and 11-5 in the WHAC. CUAA earned a split on the day with both teams winning by a score of 3-2.

Game 1 – CUAA 3, LTU 2

Jacob Clark (SR/Pinckney, MI) started game 1 on the mound for the Cardinals, recording 3 strikeouts in 7 innings of work. Concordia struck first in the top of the 1st when Grant Steinborn (JR/Flushing, MI) hit an RBI single scoring Chris Lowe (JR/DeWitt, MI). The Cardinals added another run in the top of the 2nd when a sacrifice groundout from Vann Acker (JR/Eaton Rapids, MI) scored RJ Bortle (JR/Hartland, MI).

Jacob Clark allowed just his first hit of the game in the bottom of the 3rd, but the Concordia defense quickly turned a double play to limit the damage. The Cardinals turned another double play in the 4th to maintain a 2-0 lead.

The Blue Devils scored in the bottom of the 5th to break the shutout. Another run from Lawrence Tech in the 7th tied the game 2-2.

Concordia retook the lead in the top of the 8th. Justin Mercer (SR/Howell, MI) hit a lead-off double, and a sacrifice groundout from Vann Acker advanced pinch runner Johnny Shields (FR/Howell, MI) to third base. An RBI groundout from Chris Lowe scored Shields, putting CUAA up 3-2.

Tyson Kleinfelter (FR/Perrysburg, OH) came on to pitch in the bottom of the 8th. Kleinfelter was able to secure the win for Concordia, striking out 2 of 3 batters in the 9th to end the game.

Game 2 – LTU 3, CUAA 2

Grant Steinborn began game 2 on the mound for Concordia, racking up 8 strikeouts in 6 innings. Neither team scored for the first 2 innings with Steinborn striking out 3 batters.

A 3-run homer from Lawrence Tech put the Blue Devils up 3-0 after the 3rd inning. Neither team scored in the 4th or 5th as Grant Steinborn struck out 3 more batters and Concordia turned a double play.

Grant Steinborn helped his own cause with a 2-run home run in the top of the 6th, scoring himself and Blaine Milheim (SR/Eaton Rapids, MI). Kane Bourbina (JR/Saginaw, MI) entered the game at pitcher in the bottom of the 7th inning for CUAA.

Concordia turned another double play in the 8th inning, but the Cardinal bats were unable to get going through the remainder of the game. Lawrence Tech was able to hold on to earn a 3-2 win in the nightcap.

The Cardinals move to 29-15 overall on the year after the split. The team will have a short turnaround as they host Aquinas on Wednesday, April 24 for another WHAC doubleheader. The first pitch of the first game is set for 2pm.
