The most successful and recognizable coach in the 120-plus year
history of Hillsdale College football, the man they called
“Muddy” established the Dales as a national powerhouse
during his 20-year coaching tenure from 1954-73. He led the team to
an unprecedented seven straight MIAA football titles from 1954-60,
a run that included a 34-game winning streak and three straight
undefeated regular seasons. He also served as Hillsdale
College’s athletic director, and would later go on to become
the first football coach in Saginaw Valley State University
history, and was the head coach at Michigan State University from
1980-82. He is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame and
the NAIA Hall of Fame, and his 138 career victories as head
football coach is a record that stands more than 40 years after his
glorious tenure came to an end.
