Early in her career, Arena Lewis was known as a talented distance runner who was constantly battling injuries.
Now that she's healthy, the talent part is taking over.
Lewis, a junior on the No. 5-ranked Charger women's cross country team, was named the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week Tuesday morning. The award was announced and chosen by the conference office.
She was Hillsdale's top runner at last weekend's season-opening Jeff Drenth Memorial, held at Central Michigan University. She finished sixth overall with a 5K time of 18:14.52. That time ranks as 18th-best in G-MAC history for women running a 5K course.
This was the first weekly conference award Lewis has won in her career.
