October 20, 2012 - Early in the season, the Hillsdale College volleyball team was frustrated by losing a number of sets by very close margins. The growth of this team is becoming more evident each week.
The Chargers went on the road to battle a red-hot Ashland University team and won three closely played sets over the Eagles, 25-22, 25-23 and 25-21 for a 3-0 victory Saturday afternoon in Ohio. Winners of nine straight, Hillsdale is now 13-9 overall and 9-2 in the GLIAC, and comes back home next weekend for homecoming, and will host Saginaw Valley State Friday and Lake Superior State Saturday.
Seven weeks ago, the freshmen on the team had no collegiate-level experience, and Hillsdale suffered close losses to nationally ranked foes. Fast-forward to Saturday, and two of Hillsdale's most talented freshmen stepped to the forefront to help beat an Ashland team that, like Hillsdale, went 3-0 at last weekend's GLIAC/GLVC Crossover Tournament.
Freshman Emily Wolfert had her second-straight double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs, to go along with a .304 attack percentage for the Chargers. Now playing all the way around, Wolfert has helped strengthen the team's back row play while becoming more consistent and overpowering when playing in the front row.
Freshman Haylee Booms was awesomely efficient in this match with eight kills and a career-best .727 hitting percentage. In her last four starts, Booms has at least six kills with no more than three errors and hitting percentages of .420 or better three times.
Setting the table for those young players were junior Sydney Lenhart (20 assists) and sophomore Alexis Waugh (18 assists).
Junior Caitlin Kopmeyer matched Wolfert's double-double status with a team-high 11 kills as well as 12 digs. Sophomore Bailey Lindner's 13 digs led the team, while junior Bekah Draves had another effective match for the Chargers with six kills and two block assists.
