Chargers Top Dragons

Chargers Top Dragons
September 22, 2012 - It took a set for the Hillsdale College volleyball team to get rolling Saturday afternoon. But once it did, it wasn't stopped until a 2-0 weekend was achieved.

The Chargers improved to 3-1 in the GLIAC with a 3-1 win over Tiffin University Saturday afternoon at Jesse Philips Arena. Hillsdale is now 4-8 on the season and winners of four of its past six matches, and will host Northwood University Tuesday night.

The Dragons opened the match playing at an extremely high level, passing and setting effectively while Hillsdale struggled defensively. Tiffin took set 1 25-19 while hitting .400 as a team.

Opening set 2, coach Chris Gravel tweaked the lineup, restoring Sydney Lenhart to setter while moving freshman Jenalle Beaman to libero, and the move paid immediate dividends. Hillsdale raced out to leads of 7-3 and 14-7, seizing momentum back from the Dragons. Hillsdale's passing and serve reception picked up, and the offense and blocking soon followed.

Over the final three sets of the match, the Chargers hit .389 as a team, including a single-set season-high of .524 in the decisive fourth set. Hillsdale forced Tiffin to 15 kills and 15 errors as a team in sets three and four combined.

Junior Caitlin Kopmeyer found herself "in the zone" throughout the second half of Saturday's match, and she finished with a season-high 18 kills with a .571 hitting percentage. She was one kill shy of her career-high for a match, set during last year's GLIAC Tournament. Kopmeyer also had 10 digs, three total blocks and a service ace.

Senior middle hitter Lauren Grover capped a fantastic weekend with 11 kills, a .556 hitting percentage and four total blocks (two solo). Freshman Emily Wolfert, playing her second career match at outside hitter, finished with 12 kills, four digs and two solo blocks.

Lenhart had 16 assists and 11 digs, while sophomore setter Alexis Waugh showed more improvement and confidence in her game with 26 assists and four digs. Beaman had 10 digs in her three sets as libero.
