In looking for a new women’s tennis coach in the summer of 2022, the Hillsdale College athletic department search committee identified several traits it wanted to see in a candidate.

Experience playing and coaching at high collegiate levels. A clear passion for the sport and for teaching it to younger players. A commitment to integrity, character and fair play.

In Liam Fraboulet, the Chargers found a new head coach for its women’s tennis program that checks all those boxes. Fraboulet started in the first week of September 2022, and in his first season with the program, led the Chargers to a winning record and the program's fifth consecutive G-MAC Tournament semifinal appearance.

“I’m very grateful for the opportunity to take charge of the Hillsdale College program and to get the chance to be a head coach,” Fraboulet said. “I feel like my entire career in tennis as a player and a coach have helped me get to this point, and I have so much gratitude for all the people who have helped and influenced me along the way.

“I’m really looking forward to working at Hillsdale, with a strong program that has good players and a lot of potential for the future.”

Fraboulet arrived at Hillsdale in the summer of 2022 after multiple stops as an assistant coach, most recently with the NCAA DI Coastal Carolina men’s tennis team for the 2021 season, where he helped the Chanticleers to a .500 record and a fourth-place finish in the competitive Sun Belt Conference.

That year at Coastal Carolina came after two seasons as a graduate assistant with Auburn University at Montgomery, working with both the men’s and women’s programs. Both Warhawks teams are consistently ranked in the top 25 in the nation at the NCAA Division II level and Fraboulet helped bring the best out of several of AUM’s top players during his time in Montgomery, Alabama.

A native of Plouha, France, Fraboulet originally came to the United States to play tennis collegiately at NCAA Division II Western New Mexico, where he was named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year and earned First Team All-Conference honors multiple teams throughout his career. Fraboulet was ranked as high as 14th in the nation at the NCAA DII level in the ITA Singles ranking, and 36th in the doubles rankings during his time at Western New Mexico.

As a player, Fraboulet deftly mixed a high level of play on the court with high levels of academic accomplishment off of it – a mix that makes him a good fit for an institution like Hillsdale which aspires to excellence in both areas.

“As I was interviewing for this job, I got to learn a lot about Hillsdale, its values and its mission,” Fraboulet said. “The value this school places on education and its commitment to excellence in all aspects really resonated with me.

“It’s a unique and special place and I’m excited to be a part of it.”
