Hannah Cimpeanu nets G-MAC Player of the Week award

One weekend in, and it's already a good start for the Hillsdale College Women's Tennis team and Hannah Cimpeanu (Troy, MI/Troy).

The junior had a strong showing at the ITA Midwest Regional hosted this past weekend by the University of Indianapolis, and became the first Charger athlete of the 2020-21 school year to earn Great Midwest Athletic Conference Player of the Week honors for her performance, the league office announced on Tuesday.

At the ITA regional, Cimpeanu teamed with Sarah Hackman (Island Lake, IL/Wauconda) to become the only doubles pair from a G-MAC squad to make the semifinals of the main doubles draw, beating G-MAC foes from Findlay and Walsh in two 8-6 matches to earn a spot in the final four.

In singles, Cimpeanu topped Katarina Raszum of Walsh in a 6-1, 5-7, 16-14 thriller to earn a spot in the round of 16 in the main draw as well before bowing out.

The G-MAC Player of the Week honor is Cimpeanu's fourth in her career. She won the award twice in 2018-19, and once as a freshman in 2017-18. Cimpeanu also has been the G-MAC Freshman of the Year in 2017-18, a two-time All-G-MAC First Team selection, and a part of two G-MAC conference championship teams for the Chargers.

The Hillsdale College women's tennis team is next in action in its home invitational on Oct. 3, to wrap up the fall portion of their schedule.
