Chargers take first loss of the season to open Florida trip

Box Score

A rough weather day didn't stop the Hillsdale women's tennis team from kicking off its Spring Break tennis trip in Florida on Monday.

The Chargers were unable to finish a morning match against Broward College in Davie, FL due to rainy weather, and saw its afternoon match at Palm Beach Atlantic delayed two hours due to the weather.

But ultimately Hillsdale was able to get its match in against the Sailfish, falling 4-0 to a tough squad for its first loss of the season.

The match against Palm Beach Atl. started with the Sailfish capturing all three doubles matches to take the doubles point.

Hillsdale's No. 3 doubles team of Tatum Matthews and Sophia Spinazze came the closest to pulling out a victory in doubles, taking a 6-3 loss to their Palm Beach opponents.

Palm Beach Atl. quickly wrapped up the match in the singles portion, taking straight-set wins at No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 singles to clinch the match.

While Hillsdale didn't officially win a singles match, No. 1 singles player Sarah Hackman did take a set off of the Sailfishes' Shelby Groeneveld and was heading for a deciding third set when the Palm Beach Atl. clinched the win and brought the match to a close.

Hillsdale falls to 6-1 on the season, but was looking for tough tests against high-quality Florida teams this week to help prepare for the upcoming GMAC schedule.

Next up for the Chargers is another top-tier opponent, as Hillsdale travels to take on fifth-ranked Nova Southeastern on the next leg of their Florida trip on Tuesday, March 10.
