Lakers Bring Charger Women's Tennis Season to an End in Regionals

Box Score

The best season in the history of Hillsdale College women's tennis came to an end in the first round of the NCAA Division II MIdwest Regional Monday afternoon in Detroit.

The Chargers were eliminated form the regional in a 4-0 loss to Grand Valley State in a contest played at Wayne State University. Hillsdale's loss brings the team's final record to 16-3.

In postseason play, matches are played until one team mathematically clinches a win over another. Starting off in doubles, the Chargers went down 0-1 with a loss at No. 2 doubles, but the No. 3 doubles team of  Kamryn Matthews and Madeline Bissett battled back and forth to pull out an impressive win 6-4. Being that this was the last time Bisset and Matthews would play together in doubles, it was quite a way to go out with such a win for a bittersweet ending. Their final game at 5-4 was at deuce, meaning they would either win the match or the score would be tied at 5-5 with the pressure on, but the Chargers managed to stay mentally strong and finish the match off instead. Although No. 1 doubles put up a fight and were one break away the entire match, Grand Valley took the second doubles win as well to win the overall doubles point.

In singles play, Hillsdale was off to a great start on every court, whether that was being up a break, or down a break but right with their opponents. However, the momentum changed slightly, and Grand Valley pulled ahead on most courts. Three singles courts were able to finish, with the Lakers taking all three decisions. Matthews held a lead in her match at No. 5 singles, but the match was left unfinished. Matthews concluded her junior year with a career postseason record of 11-0.
