Swimmers Show Great Progress, Finish 3rd in 11-Team Phoenix Fall Classic

SUNDAY RECAP

Sunday evening concluded the final session of the Phoenix Fall Classic at University of Chicago. Hillsdale finished in third place overall out of eleven different teams with 613 points.

Senior Anika Ellingson finished second in the 200 breaststroke with a season best time (2:22.13), and freshman Madeline Breay finished sixth with a season best (2:28.26).

Sophomore Katherine Heeres swam a season best in the 100 backstroke during prelims (59.05) and finished eighth in finals (1:00.62). Junior Bailey Bickerstaff was close to her lifetime best and finished tenth (1:00.97). Junior Taylor Steyer swam a lifetime best and finished fourteenth (1:03.18)

Five Chargers made the top 20 in the 50 freestyle. Sophomore Emma Rao swam a season best and finished sixth (24.94), sophomore Katherine Heeres also swam a season best in prelims (24.47) and finished ninth in finals (25.01). Senior Suzanne DeTar took fifteenth (25.68), and sophomore Mary Vita finished twentieth (25.93).

Four Chargers made the top 20 in the 100 butterfly. Junior Catherine Voisin swam a season best in prelims (57.84) and finished seventh in finials (58.11). Freshman Anna Clark swam a lifetime best time in prelims (58.99) and finished tenth in finals (59.60). Freshman Stefanie Walker swam a season best and finished fourteenth (1:00.76), and junior Bailey Bickerstaff swam a season best in prelims (59.60) and took fifteenth in finals (1:01.02).

Freshman Anja Nuet finished twelfth in the 400 IM (5:01.39).

Sophomore Mary Vita swam a season in the 200 freestyle best during prelims (1:59.45) and took ninth in finals (2:00.29) and senior Suzanne DeTar finished eleventh (1:59.66).

The 400 freestyle A-relay of Heeres, Vita, Rao, and DeTar finished seventh (3:42.10), and the B-relay of Houghton, Bickerstaff, Voisin, and Ellingson had a very close eighth place finish behind the A-relay (3:42.47).

 

SATURDAY RECAP

Hillsdale had a successful second day at the Phoenix Fall Classic. Fifteen Chargers qualified for finals and scored in the top 20, and the team is currently in third place behind University of Chicago and Lewis University.

Senior Anika Ellingson won the 100 breaststroke with a season best time (1:04.10). Ellingson also dropped 2 seconds from her prelim time in the 200 IM and finished twelfth (2:12.80).

Five Chargers made finals in the 200 butterfly and four of them swam lifetime best times. Junior Catherine Voisin swam a lifetime best and finished fourth (2:06.52). Freshman Anna Clark swam a lifetime best in prelims (2:10.82) and finished seventh in finals (2:10.95). Senior Grace Houghton took eighth (2:11.44). Junior Bailey Bickerstaff swam a lifetime best in prelims (2:16.72) and placed thirteenth (2:18.56). Junior Lizzie Leathers swam a lifetime best by 6 seconds (2:19.64) and finished seventeenth in finals (2:22.39).

Three Charger distance swimmers scored points in the 500 freestyle. Senior Grace Houghton dropped 3.5 seconds from prelims and finished ninth (5:22.58), freshman Stefanie Walker dropped 8 seconds from prelims for twelfth place (5:25.04), and junior Lizzie Leathers swam a lifetime best in prelims (5:36.70) and finished nineteenth in finals (5:39.18).

Junior Taylor Steyer dropped almost 7 seconds in the 200 backstroke for a lifetime best time and sixteenth place (2:19.66). Freshman Madeline Breay dropped over a second from prelims in the 100 breaststroke for seventh place (1:08.72).

Charger sprinters all finished within .3 of each other. Sophomore Mary Vita swam a lifetime best in prelims (55.03) and finished seventeenth in finals (55.35), senior Suzanne DeTar finished eighteenth (55.48), and sophomore Emma Rao finished nineteenth (55.67).

The 200 medley A-relay of Heeres, Ellingson, Voisin, and DeTar finished second (1:47.75), the B-relay of Bickerstaff, Breay, Rao, and Boyle finished sixth (1:51.27), and the C-relay of Steyer, Nuet, Clark, and Briskey finished twelfth (1:54.16). The 800 freestyle A-relay of Breay, Vita, Voisin, and Heeres finished fourth (7:57.64).

 

FRIDAY RECAP

Friday evening, Hillsdale swimmers joined ten other teams for the annual Phoenix Fall Classic held at University of Chicago. The meet will continue through Sunday evening with prelim and final swims everyday.

Charger distance all finished within two seconds of each other in the 1650. Senior Grace Houghton took seventh (18:30.09), freshman Madeline Breay swam the mile for the first time and finished eighth (18:31.36), and freshman Anna Clark dropped 40 seconds from her best time and took ninth (18:32.37).

The 400 medley A-relay of Heeres, Ellingson, Voisin, and DeTar finished second (3:53.09), and the B-relay of Bickerstaff, Breay, Clark, and Vita finished 10th (4:0477).

The 200 freestyle A-relay of Vita, Boyle, Rao, and DeTar tied for fourth place and the B-relay of Briskey, Walker, Steyer, and Bickerstaff finished 10th.
