Late 3 Sends SVSU Past Charger Women

Box Score

A late 3-point basket turned out to be the difference as the Hillsdale College women's basketball team lost it season opener to Saginaw Valley State 53-50 Friday morning at the Dawn Tibbetts Potter Arena.

The Chargers are back home Sunday afternoon, hosting Northwood University at 2:00.

The Cardinals' Maddie Berrie with 19 seconds left broke a 50-50 tie and gave SVSU the lead for good. The Chargers were unable to score on their final possession, losing the game in frustrating fashion.

Saginaw Valley State held Hillsdale scoreless over the game's final 3:03. Charger guard Jaycie Burger swished a 3-pointer that gave the Chargers a 50-44 lead at that stage. But SVSU ended the game on a 9-0 run, capped by Berrie's game-deciding three.

The Chargers shot 32 percent from the field while the Cardinals weren't much better at 34 percent. Hillsdale outrebounded SVSU 41-35, but the Cardinals made four more free throws - on eight more attempts - than the Chargers, nearly matching the final result.

Hillsdale sophomore Lauren Daffenberg scored a career-high 25 points, providing half of Hillsdale's points in the game. She got hot with a run of three straight threes in the second quarter and made six 3-point shots in the contest.

Burger had 5 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists, and Sydney Mills and Sydney Anderson each scored 5 points.
