It was a high-scoring season opener for the Hillsdale College women's basketball team.

The Chargers opened the new year with a difficult road game at Lewis and lost a 94-80 decision to the Flyers Friday afternoon.

Hillsdale is back in action Sunday at the University of Indianapolis.

Both offenses were clicking at a rate more reminiscent of the middle of the season than the beginning. The game started off with a quick pace and both teams hitting shots consistently in the first quarter. The Chargers held a 32-31 lead early in the second quarter, but Lewis responded with a 15-5 run that gave it the lead for good.

The Flyers shot 52 percent in the game and outscored the Chargers 22-11 from the free throw line. Hillsdale's field goal percentage of 48 was nothing to be ashamed of, and the Chargers had five players score in double figures.

Junior Makenna Ott scored 15 of her 17 points in the first half, making six of her first nine shots from the floor to help Hillsdale get off to a good start. Junior guard Allie Dewire led the Chargers with 20 points, 4 rebounds and 6 assists in the game.

Freshman guard Jaycie Burger looked comfortable and confident in her collegiate debut, scoring 12 points in 27 minutes off the bench for Hillsdale. Senior Maddy Reed and junior Brittany Gray each scored 12 in the game, while Gray led the team with 6 rebounds.

Jessica Kelliher led Lewis with 27 points.
