Ohio Dominica's Alexis Overly capped a productive fourth quarter with a jump shot with 0.9 seconds to go that provided the difference in the Panthers' 70-68 win over the Hillsdale College women's basketball team at the Dawn Tibbetts Potter Arena Saturday afternoon.
The stunning loss leaves the Chargers at 12-9 overall and 6-8 in the GLIAC, while the Panthers are 14-6 and 9-4.
Overly scored eight of her 16 points in the fourth quarter, helping ODU erase a 10-point deficit in the game's final 10 minutes. The game featured big runs and momentum swings by both teams, but the Panthers had the last one.
Ohio Dominican led 34-29 at halftime, but Hillsdale responded impressively in the third, outscoring the Panthers 20-8 to take a 49-42 lead entering the fourth. A 3-pointer by freshman Bree Porter gave Hillsdale a 54-44 lead with 8:05 left in the game. But from that point, ODU scored on eight of its next nine possessions, cutting the deficit to two after Overly's second three of the quarter.
Porter made a leaning jump shot to put Hillsdale up five, 68-63 with 1:39 left in the game. However, the Chargers struggled offensively from there, missing three straight free throws and committing two turnovers from there. Overly converted a layup to tie the game at 68 with 36 seconds to go. After a missed jumper by Hillsdale, Overly nailed the game-winner on the team's final possession. The Chargers were unable to get a shot off on the last possession of the game.
The Panthers had a 46-35 edge on the boards, helping to neutralize a monster performance by Hillsdale junior Allie Dittmer.
Dittmer finished with 18 points, 16 rebounds and three steals for Hillsdale, overpowering most defenders who tried to guard her throughout the game. She was 9-for-13 from the field and had six offensive rebounds.
Sophomore guard Allie Dewire was battered and bruised in the game, and scratched out 20 points, three rebounds, five assists and five steals while shooting 7-for-12 from the field. Sophomore Makenna Ott scored 7 points while junior Jessica De Gree came off the bench to add 6.
