The Hillsdale College women's basketball team was unable to overcome a deep first-half deficit, and despite playing much better in the second half, lost its GLIAC opener, 70-55 to Northwood University Thursday night in Midland.
The Chargers, 1-4 overall and 0-1 in the GLIAC, will take on Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie at 1:00 Saturday afternoon.
The Timberwolves (3-2, 1-0) held the Chargers to 20 percent shooting in the first half (5-for-25) en route to building a 35-16 lead at halftime. Hillsdale more than doubled its offensive output in the second half, but it wasn't quite enough.
Neither team burned up the nets in the game, with Hillsdale shooting 29 percent from the field compared to 31 for Northwood. But the Timberwolves outscored Hillsdale 18-3 on 3-point field goals, limiting the Chargers to just one make from beyond the arc. The game featured a hoard of free throws, with the teams combining for 69 attempts from the charity stripe. The Timberwolves held a 28-22 edge on free throw shots in the game.
Northwood also outscored Hillsdale 23-9 in points off turnovers.
Sophomore guard Madison Berry (pictured) logged 20 minutes on the court and scored a career-high 10 points for the Chargers.
Junior forward Megan Fogt had another monster day for Hillsdale. She maintained her record-setting start to the 2013-14 season with 21 points and 19 rebounds. She tacked on three assists and three blocked shots in the loss for Hillsdale.
Junior Brooke Borowski had nine points, while sophomore Kayla Geffert contributed five points, three rebounds and two steals.
