Late Run Drops Chargers

Late Run Drops Chargers

Box Score

January 10, 2013 - The Hillsdale College women's basketball team was on the wrong end of a game-ending 19-3 run in Thursday night's GLIAC contest at Tiffin University.

The Chargers used two free throws by freshman Kayla Geffert to take a 50-49 lead in the second half. But the Dragons scored 19 of the game's final 22 points to pull away with a 68-53 decision. Hillsdale is now 4-8 overall and 1-8 in the GLIAC. The team is back in action at home for the first time in the new year Saturday, hosting Ohio Dominican University at 3 p.m.

Although Hillsdale has lost five striaght conference games, very few of them could be characterized as blowouts. The team has been competitive with its opponents through different parts of all of its games recently. The same was true Thursday, as the teams battled back and forth and traded the lead 10 times and saw the score tied seven times.

Over the game's final 4:46, Hillsdale went 1-for-7 shooting from the field and had two turnovers, while Tiffin was able to score 11 points from the free throw line alone (on 18 attempts), while not missing any of its final three field goal attempts, two of those from 3-point land.

For the game, Tiffin was able to overcome its 11 misses from the foul line by taking 11 more shots from that area than Hillsdale (27-16). The Dragons also adjusted their defense effectively down the stretch against the Chargers' most effective offensive player.

Sophomore Megan Fogt picked up her fourth 20-point game of the season, leading the team with 23 points on 11-for-18 shooting from the field. She also grabbed seven rebounds and had three steals. However, Tiffin held Fogt without a field goal attempt over the game's final 5:50, limiting the Chargers' most reliable offensive weapon.

Geffert finished the game with a career-high eight points to go along with five rebounds, also a career-high. Senior Lea Jones and freshmen Ashlynn Landherr and Sarah Theut each popped in five points.

Tiffin was led by Jordan Fraley's 22 points. She came off the bench to hit seven of her eight 3-point shots. Jessica Harris paced the Dragons on the boards with 17 points and 16 rebounds. The Dragons outrebounded the Chargers 50-38 and held a 24-9 advantage on made 3-point baskets.
