Cardinals Rally to Top Chargers

Box Score

January 5, 2013 - The Saginaw Valley State University women's basketball team outscored Hillsdale College by 18 points in the final 18 minutes of Saturday night's game to come away with a 63-58 victory over the Chargers at SVSU's Ryder Center.

The loss drops Hillsdale to 4-7 overall and 1-7 in the GLIAC. The team begins play against its South Division foes Thursday night at Tiffin before returning home to host Ohio Dominican on Jan. 12.

Hillsdale held control of the game throughout much of the first half, and led by as many as 13 points in the second half, despite not having leading scorer and rebounder Megan Fogt for very many minutes due to foul trouble. Although Fogt delivered another excellent performance (18 points and 11 rebounds), SVSU found its way to the basket more frequently and effectively throughout the second half.

The Cardinals outscored the Chargers 42-24 over the game's final 18 minutes to secure their first win over Hillsdale since December 2001.

SVSU shot 44 percent from the field, 11 points better than the Chargers with much of that margin occurring in the second half. Although Hillsdale held a 44-41 edge on the boards, the team struggled to find consistent offense outside of Fogt in the game's final 10 minutes.

Fogt has nine double-doubles in 11 games.

Lea Jones, Kadie Lowery and Marissa DeMott each scored seven for Hillsdale. Freshman Sarah Theut had four points and four rebounds, all in the first half.
