From the Range Master...

It’s mid-April and the sun and showers are bringing everything back to life, including the range!
The month could not have started better, as our Chargers brought home their 5th National Championship Title! We look forward to another successful season next year.
Rain and snow slowed down the shooting for week one of Open Clay Targets, but the nicer weather has encouraged many to enjoy some clay shooting for the rest of the month. We’ve had a great number of youth shooting Olympic Bunker in preparation for the Michigan Junior Olympic State Championships we are hosting May 6th and 7th.
We plan to continue working with and supporting youth shooters in our region, giving them the opportunity to use our facilities, and helping them advance to the elite levels where they can represent the United States around the world. It is a gift to have these great facilities—we have a responsibility to promote education in shooting sports.
The Sporting Clays course is now open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 10:00am. Last squad out is at 2:00pm.
Saturday, April 29th is our annual open house. We will have all of our clay target fields open at discounted rates. Join us for a great day with friends and family!

"We love to have visitors here at the Shooting Range. You're always welcome. There's no college in the country that has a facility like this."
April 7th - Wayne LaPierre, Executive Vice President of the National Rifle Association gave a passionate address at the Hillsdale College Searle Center. He is pictured here with the Shotgun Team & Coaches Mike Carl and Adam Burlew.

ACUI National Championships
For the 4th consecutive year, the Hillsdale College Shotgun Team won the Division 3 National Championship. This is an incredible accomplishment. Our Chargers competed against over 800 students from 85 different schools. Several team members also won individual awards for their achievements. Of the 10 members on Hillsdale’s team, 5 are All-Americans—Drew Lieske, Jordan Hintz, Kie Kababik, Matt Grunzweig, and Ian Dupre. The National Championship is an intense five day competition. Each of our athletes must shoot all six events. The team’s success is truly dependent on each individual’s personal scores. Junior Emanuel Boyer said, “We need every single score we get—we’re not walking into these victories.” On the final day of competition, the team showed just how strong they are as individuals. Senior Jordan Hintz shot a 100 at American Trap and said he was glad to do his part—“It’s a target for the team—that’s what matters the most to me.” Being a part of this elite Shotgun shooting team requires sacrifice. The team shoots 300 rounds a week and often travels for events throughout the year. For the National Championships, the team misses an entire week of school to compete. Understandingly, in their spare time down in Texas, many individuals attempt to get some homework done. Little things, like homework, job stress, or relationship issues, become big things in this intense sport requiring extreme mental focus. Even the weather has a significant effect, particularly traveling from Michigan to Texas. Senior Kyle Luttig said, “We go from practicing in 30 degrees to baking sun and 80 degrees. It’s mentally and physically different, and an instant transition. You start to notice the smallest things, like your glasses fogging up from sweating and the humidity.” The Charger shotgun team is so successful because these disciplined athletes have conquered the mental aspect of the game. Senior Casey Inks discussed how everything in shooting is quantitative—in order to score, you have to break the target: “There’s no defense in shooting, it’s strictly an offensive game.” Everyone on the team seemed content with how they performed at Nationals. And they should be. Speaking of competing at Nationals, Senior Ian Dupre said this is the time when, “You want to dig deep and find something that pushes you when it counts.” I wonder what the team found during that week in Texas, because they definitely made it count. After five days of shotgun shooting, the Hillsdale Chargers placed higher than every other school present but the Division 1 Champion, Lindenwood University. Total, the team broke 2,244 of 2,350 targets. Congratulations once again Hillsdale College Shotgun Shooters!
