Charger Softball Splits With Ashland

Game 1 box score: Ashland 4, Hillsdale 1

Game 2 box score: Hillsdale 3, Ashland 1

The Hillsdale College softball team stayed in contention for first place in the GLIAC, splitting with Ashland University in a conference doubleheader at home Saturday afternoon at Johnny Williams Field.

The Chargers recovered from a 4-1 game 1 loss to post a 3-1 win in the nightcap over the Eagles, improving to 24-19 overall and 12-6 in the GLIAC.

Hillsdale plays its final home games of the 2017 season Sunday afternoon against Ohio Dominican.

Ashland held Hillsdale to just five hits in game 1. One of those was the sole source of offense for the Chargers, and came off the bat of senior Bekah Kastning.

She hit her second home run of the season, a rocket to dead center field, in the bottom of the third inning. But that would be the only action on the scoreboard for the Chargers in this game, as Ashland scored in the first and third innings to take a quick early lead.

Freshman pitcher Erin Gordon turned in an impressive performance on the mound in the second game, allowing just three hits in five innings of shutout work. She struck out one, winning her seventh game of the season. Dana Weidinger posted her second save of the season in wrapping up the victory.

Offensively, Katie Kish and Kelsey Gockman each had two hits for the Chargers. Kish and Amanda Marra each drove in runs, and Kastning, Carly Gouge and Jessica Taylor scored the team's three runs in the win.

Kastning was 1-for-4, giving her 74 hits on the season, just two shy of the school's single-season record.
