Hillsdale stayed entrenched in the top tier of the GLIAC standings thanks to a doubleheader sweep of Walsh University in Ohio Saturday afternoon.
The Chargers took down the Cavaliers by scores of 6-1 and 8-0, improving to 21-18 overall and 11-5 in the GLIAC. The team is tied for second place in the conference with Wayne State, percentage points behind Saginaw Valley State.
The team immediately took the lead in the first game, starting with Cassie Asselta getting hit by a pitch for the unheard-of 15th time this season. Junior Kelsey Gockman promptly belted a two-run home run to put the Chargers on top 2-0.
Hillsdale pushed two more runs across in both the fifth and sixth innings.
Freshman pitcher Erin Gordon was one batter away from putting together her first career complete game shutout. She allowed a run-scoring hit with two outs in the bottom of the seventh that ruined her shutout. But it far from spoiled a terrific outing, as she earned the victory with one strikeout and six hits allowed in seven innings.
Freshman Sydney San Juan was 2-for-3 with 2 RBI. Senior Bekah Kastning had a double, going 2-for-4 with a run scored and a run batted in. Sam Catron and Amanda Marra each had a hit and scored a run.
Kastning made some more history in the 8-0 win in game two. As part of her 3-for-4 day, she hit her 13th career triple, tying the career school record in that category. She currently leads the GLIAC with five triples on the season.
The Chargers scored twice in the second and four more times in the fourth to grab control of the game.
Freshman pitcher Dana Weidinger logged the complete game shutout, with one strikeout and just four hits allowed in six innings of work.
Freshman Shelby Sprouse went 2-for-2 with 2 RBI to provide the offense with a nice boost from the lower half of the order. Sophomore Katie Kish and Catron had identical 2-for-3 with two runs scored games, and Asselta and Marra each had doubles in the win.
