The Hillsdale College softball team won one and lost one on the road Friday afternoon in Ohio.
The Chargers won the opener against Lake Erie College 7-2 in Painesville in a GLIAC matchup. The Storm came back to post a 10-7 win in the second game.
Hillsdale is now 19-18 overall and 9-5 in the GLIAC after the split. The team continues its journey thorugh Ohio with a pair of games at Walsh Saturday.
In the opener, the Chargers took a 4-0 lead through three innings and never lost the advantage. Freshman shorstop Sam Catron had a big day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a career-high 4 RBI and a stolen base.
Senior Bekah Kastning added an RBI double, and sophomore Katie Kish, the team's hottest hitter of late, was 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Freshman Sydney San Juan added a pair of hits in the win.
Freshman Dana Weidinger earned her 15th win of the season, striking out four in a seven-inning body of work.
Game two saw the Storm take the big early lead, jumping out to a 4-0 lead through three, then tacking on six more in the fifth. Hillsdale scored one in the fourth and two in the fifth to avoid the mercy rule, but nearly pulled off a remarkable comeback.
Junior Kelsey Gockman belted a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to make it a 10-6 game. Freshman Shelby Sprouse followed with a run-scoring single to make it a three-run contest, but that would be the closest the team would get.
Gockman drove in four runs in the loss, and Catron and Amanda Marra each cranked out two hits. Kastning was 2-for-4 with a run scored and a run batted in, and Kish scored two runs.
