Softball Team Gains Split With GVSU

Game 1 box score: Grand Valley State 8, Hillsdale 2

Game 2 box score: Hillsdale 5, Grand Valley State 4

The Hillsdale College softball team faced Grand Valley State University in conference double-header at home Saturday afternoon. The Chargers dropped the first game 8-2, but took the win in the nightcap 5-4.

In the first game, senior Kyra Rodi took the mound for her first collegiate start. She was relieved by freshman Erin Gordon in the top of the second as the Chargers fell behind 7-0 in the inning. Hillsdale took a run back in the bottom of the inning as freshman Sydney San Juan eventually scored after drawing a lead-off walk.

Senior Bekah Kastning led off the bottom of the third with a double and was scored on a double from freshman Victoria Addis, bringing the score to 7-2.

The Lakers scored their final run in the top of the fourth inning and the score remained 8-2.

In the second game, Weidinger recorded the win for the Chargers with three strikeouts.

The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the third when the Lakers took the lead 1-0 and extended it to 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth. The Chargers responded in the top of the fifth, tying the game 2-2. Seniors Cassie Asselta and Kastning led off the inning with back-to-back singles and were eventually scored from a 2 RBI single from Addis.

The Lakers regained the lead, scoring 1 run in the bottom of the fifth inning, however Hillsdale took over 5-3 in the top of the sixth. Freshman Sam Catron and sophomore Amanda Marra singled to lead off the inning and were scored by a single from Asselta.

The Chargers allowed a run in the bottom of the seventh, but were able to hold on.

In game two, Asselta was 3-for-3 while Kastning went 3-for-4, each driving in a run.
