Hillsdale Gains Split on Final Day of Softball Crossover Event

After a rough start to its day, the Charger softball team finished its weekend on a high note Sunday afternoon.

In the second day of competition at the Midwest Region Crossover, Hillsdale lost to undefeated Southern Indiana 11-1. But in the day's second game, the team rebounded to post a 4-3 win over McKendree.

Hillsdale stands at 4-5 on the season, with its next competition taking place in Florida over Spring Break.

The Chargers produced just three baserunners in the first game, with walks drawn by Julia Huebner and Carly Gouge. Junior Haley Lawrence blasted a solo home run to provide the team's only offense in the loss. It was the team's first home run of the season.

USI scored eight runs in the third inning to break the game open.

In game two on the day, the Chargers scored all four of their runs in the bottom of the second inning, and held off the Bearcats to notch their first win of the weekend.

Freshman pitcher Dana Weidinger retired the final five batters she faced after McKendree hit a home run to make it a 4-3 game in the sixth inning. She finished with four strikeouts and just one walk and one earned run allowed.

Freshman Sam Catron got the Chargers on the board with a two-run single in the second inning to put Hillsdale on top 2-0. Sophomore Katie Kish smacked a two-run double in the team's next at bat to double the lead to 4-0.

Senior Cassie Asselta was 2-for-3 with a run scored for Hillsdale.
