April 21, 2013 - The sun finally came out for Sunday's GLIAC doubleheader between Lake Erie College and Hillsdale College, and the weather matched the mood of the Chargers throughout the day.
Before the doubleheader, Hillsdale's six seniors were honored in a pre-game ceremony as part of Senior Day. The Chargers then went out and swept the Storm by scores of 7-3 and 6-3 to improve to 10-14 overall and 9-8 in the GLIAC.
The team's seven-game winning streak is its longest since an eight-game streak that happened near the end of the 2010 season. But more importantly, Hillsdale now sits in eighth place in the GLIAC. The top eight teams qualify for the postseason conference tournament.
In the first game, senior shortstop Kate Hoop had one of her best offensive games of her terrific four-year career. She went 2-for-3 with a run scored, 4 RBI, a home run and a double to spark the Charger offense. Her homer to left was the sixth of her career and first since April 10, 2012.
At the opposite end of Hoop's experience scale is freshman outfielder Ainsley Ellison, who set a new career-high with four hits in the first game. She came inches from her first career home run, and she scored two runs. Ellison has enjoyed a sensational rookie season for the Chargers, and is batting .408 through the end of Sunday's games.
Sophomore pitcher Katie Ardrey picked up her third win of the weekend, going 5 2/3 innings on the mound with one earned run allowed. At the plate, Ardrey went 2-for-3 with a run batted in and a run scored.
Freshman Sarah Klopfer came into the game with the bases loaded in the sixth inning, and got out of the ja, going on to record her first career save. Klopfer then set a career-high with seven strikeouts in notching the complete-game victory in the nightcap for Hillsdale.
In that game two win, eight different batters had hits for the Chargers, with freshman Sarah Grunert driving in two runs. Hoop had two more hits and drove in another run, giving her 5 RBI on Senior Day. Senior Miriam McKay also made a number of athletic defensive plays from her spot at second base throughout both games.
Hillsdale is scheduled to host Urbana University in a non-league doubleheader at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.
