April 7, 2013 - The Charger softball team lost a pair of games in frustrating fashion on a windy Sunday afternoon at Johnny Williams Field.
Ashland University took full advantage of Hillsdale's mistakes in sweeping a GLIAC doubleheader from the Chargers, 8-2 and 6-4. The losses drop Hillsdale to 3-14 overall on the season. The Chargers are scheduled to play at home Wednesday afternoon against Saginaw Valley State University starting at 3:30 p.m.
Errors plagued the Chargers in both games, and it seemed like every time one happened, the Eagles jumped all over the opportunity. Hillsdale committed eight errors in the two games combined, and Ashland's batting average after those errors was .833 (5-for-6) during the doubleheader.
Hillsdale fell behind 5-0 in the first inning of game one, but was very competitive the rest of the way. Sarah Grunert and Katie Ardrey each had runs batted in during the fifth inning. Senior Taylor Schulty went 3-for-4 in the opener, including her eighth double of the season.
One of the bright spots on the day for Hillsdale was the hitting of junior Kristi Gordon (pictured). She had two hits in each half of the doubleheader, going 4-for-7 overall. She's already set a career-high for hits in a season, and raised her batting average to .387 for the season during her current five-game hitting streak.
In game two, sophomore Courtney Day had a pair of RBI, including the go-ahead hit in the top of the seventh that completed a rally from 3-0 down to give the Chargers a 4-3 lead. But Hillsdale committed two errors in the first two Ashland at bats of the bottom of the seventh, which was followed by a walk-off home run by the Eagles to end the game.
Senior Miriam McKay smacked a solo home run in the second game for the Chargers, while Grunert had a double and a run scored.
