Hillsdale Does the Splits with Findlay in GLIAC Softball Opener

March 23, 2013 - In the second game of Saturday's GLIAC doubleheader, the Chargers got the bats heated up on a cold day in Ohio.

Junior Kristi Gordon blasted a 3-run home run to help the Chargers come back from a 5-3 deficit to post a 10-5 win over the University of Findlay at the Marathon Diamonds.

The Saturday doubleheader was the GLIAC opener for both teams. Hillsdale is now 2-7 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

The second game was a high-scoring affair from the get-go, with Hillsdale jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first after an RBI triple by senior Kate Hoop. Findlay responded with four runs in the third inning and one more in the fourth to take a 5-3 lead. Then, Hillsdale came back, with innings of three and four runs in the fifth and sixth to break it open.

Hoop went 3-for-3 with 3 RBI and two runs scored to lead the offense. Senior Taylor Schulty and Gordon each had two hits, with Gordon driving in a career-high four runs. Freshman Sarah grunert came through in the clutch with two pinch hits, driving in two runs as well.

Sophomore Katie Ardrey got her first win of the season on the mound for Hillsdale, with Sarah Klopfer pitching the last two innings in relief.

Game 1
The Oilers used a grand-slam home run in the top of the fifth inning to break open a close game en route to a 7-1 win over the Chargers in Saturday's first game.

Freshman Julia Kosco drew three walks, while senior Miriam McKay had two hits in the game for Hillsdale. Senior Kate Hoop provided the only RBI in the game, with a single that scored Kosco in the fifth inning.

These games were origianlly scheduled to be played at Hillsdale, but Findlay's fields were in much better condition, forcing the switch in venues.
