Softball Team Goes 1-2 in Final Day in Florida

March 10, 2013 - The Hillsdale College softball team got its first win of the season on the first day of its final day on its three-day trip to Florida.

The Chargers opened play Saturday with a 16-1 win over Lourdes, a school based in Toledo. Hillsdale lost its final two games, 8-2 to Mount Vernon Nazarene, and 5-0 to Winona State.

Hillsdale pounded out 18 hits in its Saturday morning win. Eleven different players had at least one hit, and five had multi-hit games.

Freshman outfielder Ainsley Ellison, who is the team's leading hitter through seven games, scored three runs and went 2-for-2. Sophomore Jenny Bals had a career-hig hthree hits, scored twice and drove in three runs. Senior Taylor Schulty went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI.

Sophomore Katie Ardrey drove in three runs, and freshman Sarah Grunert went 2-for-2 with two runs scored. The Chargers scored two or more runs in all five of the innings played in the game, and freshman pitcher Sarah Klopfer recorded her first collegiate win, striking out four batters.

In the team's loss to Mount Vernon, Ellison and Schulty had three hits apiece, and freshman catcher Danielle Garceau had a hit and two runs batted in. 

Ellison, Schulty and sophomore Emily Pillivant accounted for the team's only hits in the loss to one of Minnesota's top Division II softball programs, Winona State.
