Big personal best for Chargers' Ben Haas as Last Chance week gets underway

Freshman Ben Haas has been impressive all season outdoors, and on Tuesday at the GVSU Last Chance Meet in Allendale, Michigan, Haas put his best foot forward as he looks to get into the 2023 NCAA DII Outdoor Championships in two weeks.

Haas, a thrower on the Hillsdale College men's track and field team, finished runner-up in both the shot put and the hammer throw with NCAA DII Provisional Qualifying marks in both events on Tuesday. He had a huge personal best in the shot put, throwing over 17 meters for the first time with a mark of 17.28 meters that moves him up to 20th at the NCAA DII level in the shot put.

The freshman also had a solid day in the hammer throw, placing second with a mark of 58.95 meters, less than a meter off his personal best mark in the event that ranks 26th nationally.

Both marks put Haas on the bubble to qualify to travel to the NCAA DII Outdoor Championships, scheduled to be held in Pueblo, Colorado on May 25-27. The freshman, who finished third in the nation in the weight throw at the 2023 NCAA DII Indoor Championships in March, will have one more chance to improve his marks and solidify his place in the field in the Harrison Dillard Twilight Classic hosted by Baldwin-Wallace on Friday. The Charger men are also sending athletes to the Oakland Last Chance meet as well as Hillsdale attempts to get as many athletes as it can to the national meet in two weeks.
