Senior Jared Schipper's school record of 5.16 meters in pole vault fell today as he soared over 5.40 meters at the Hillsdale Invitational, the Chargers' first home outdoor meet of the 2019 season. He crushed the NCAA Division II national qualifying mark of 5.20 and now leads in pole vault by .10 meters out of all Division II schools. His teammate, freshman Ben Raffin, came in second with a mark of 4.73 meters.
Three Chargers set new personal records in the javelin throw. Freshman John Baldwin took third in, while sophomore Ryan Thomsen took fifth. The two threw 44.20 and 42.13 meters, respectively. Senior David Chase came in ninth with a throw of 38.33 meters.
Freshman Chris Huffman threw 46.94 meters in the hammer throw to take sixth.
The Chargers swept the 110 meter hurdles. Baldwin took first with 14.59 seconds. Junior Ian Brown continues to drop his time this season as he set a new personal record with a time of 14.72 seconds to take second. Thomsen finished in 15.37 to take third.
Senior Nathan Pando came in second out of 22 runners in the 200 meter dash. He finished in 22.05 seconds. Freshman Jacob Schmidt finished in sixth in 23.01.
Pando and Schimdt teamed up with Baldwin and senior Levi Wyse to run the fastest 4-by-100 meter relay fo the season. The team took first by more than a second, finishing in 41.99 seconds.
Freshman Peter Kalthoff stepped off the basketball court to join the Chargers on the track. He competed in high jump, taking sixth with a mark of 1.89 meters.
And in the 5,000 meter run, Hillsdale was well represented. Sophomore Mark Miller led the pack of blue around the track as he took first place in 15:08.25. The Chargers took third through seventh place behind him. Leading that pack was sophomore Jack Shelley who finished in 15:20.48, and junior Alex Oquist was right behind in 15:21.18.
