GVSU Big Meet - Saturday Results
Grand Valley State University hosted its annual Big Meet on Friday and Saturday. The Chargers competed against elite competition, giving them great opportunities for achieving new personal records and provisional standards.
In the 60m dash, senior Levi Wyse sprinted to a season-best time of 7.15 seconds. Fellow senior Nathan Pando was right behind, finishing in 7.20. Pando ran the 200m dash as well, finishing in 22.85.
Freshman Mark Miller nearly tied his personal best time of 4:15.46 in the mile run. He finished Friday's race in 4:15.80. Sophomore teammate Jack Shelley raced in the following heat to finish in 4:19.38.
Junior Joey Humes had one goal going into the 3000m race: sub-8:15. With the right competition to pull him along, he achieved that goal, finishing in 8:14.26 to surpass the provisional mark of 8:23.38. He placed sixth overall among a highly competitive field of athletes.
The 4x400m relay team of Wyse, Pando, sophomore Adam Wade, and freshman John Baldwin ran the fastest time of the season of 3:20.04 to take ninth place.
Freshman pole vaulter Ben Raffin has seen steady improvement all season. On Friday in Allendale, Michigan, he took second place with a mark of 4.81 meters. Even though that was higher than a provisional mark, it still wasn't good enough for him. He came back on Saturday to win the event and vault 4.91 meters for a new personal record.
Saturday's 200m race was filled with two personal best for the Chargers. Freshman Peter Curtis finished in 23.04 seconds, beating his previous best time by nearly a second. Junior Ian Brown finished right behind in 23.26.
Junior Alex Oquist cross the finish line with a new personal best in the 3000m run as well. He finished 14th overall in 8:38.33.
Hillsdale's distance medley relay of Miller, Wade, Shelley and Humes finished with a time of 10:16.77.
The Chargers will compete at home next Saturday in the Hillsdale Tune Up before the G-MAC Championship meet the following weekend.
