Once again, both the Hillsdale College men's and women's tennis programs were well represented when the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced their 2020 All-Academic Teams and Scholar Athletes on Tuesday.
All-Academic Team honors are becoming a yearly tradition for the Chargers, as 2020 marked the third straight season the Hillsdale men have earned the award, and the fourth year in a row for the Charger women.
In order to earn All-Academic Team honors, a team must have a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or above among all varsity letter-winners for the current academic year, a threshold the Chargers easily exceeded in the 2019-20 school year.
With both teams earning academic recognition, it's not surprising that several Charger tennis players earned individual academic accolades as well. Thirteen Hillsdale students were named Scholar-Athletes by the ITA, six men and seven women.
On the men's side, graduated seniors Charlie Adams, Julien Clouette and Michael Szabo all earned Scholar-Athlete honors, as did teammates Tyler Conrad, Gabe Katz and Bogdan Janicijevic.
For the women, graduated seniors Katie Bell and Kamryn Matthews led the way, receiving Scholar-Athlete honors, as did teammates Ellie Chawner, Hannah Cimpeanu, Elli Formentin, Canela Luna and Sophia Spinazze.
In order to receive ITA Scholar-Athlete Honors, an athlete must be an active member of their team and maintain a 3.5 GPA or higher for the 2019-20 school year.
On the men's side, Clouette and Katz are both three-time scholar athletes, and Szabo is a two-time honoree. For the women, Bell and Cimpeanu are both three-time Scholar-Athletes, and Formentin, Matthews and Spinazze have been recognized twice by the ITA.
