Hillsdale Tops Ashland in Spring Season Opener

Box Score

The Hillsdale College men's tennis team opened its 2019 spring season with a close road win over Ashland University, 4-3, Saturday afternoon at the Lakewood Raquet Club. Hillsdale is 2-0 overall on the season and will host Davenport University Sunday afternoon.

In new NCAA Division II scoring rules, the three doubles matches count as one point in the team score, with that crucial point going to whichever team wins two of the three doubles flights. In this match, it was Hillsdale who came away with that 1-0 doubles lead, thanks to wins by the No. 1 pairing of Justin Hyman and Charlie Adams (6-4) and the No. 3 team of Julien Clouette and Brian Hackman (6-4).

The Chargers won three straight-set matches in the singles flights, starting with a victory at No. 6 singles by Gabe Katz, 6-1, 6-2. Adams recorded his second win of the day at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-4, while Hyman also picked up a second win, at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-4.
