Men's Tennis Splits Road Matches in Illinois

Box score - Hillsdale 6, Illinois-Springfield 3

Some excellent singles performances made the difference as the Hillsdale College men's tennis team picked up a road win over Illinois-Springfield Saturday afternoon. The Chargers are 4-4 after the victory.

Hillsdale was down 2-1 after doubles play, with the No. 3 squad of Milan Mirkovic and Julien Clouette getting an 8-2 win for the team's only doubles victory.

All of Hillsdale's singles wins came in straight sets, led by No. 1 singles Charlie Adams, who got a 6-4, 6-3 win. Sophomore Justin Hyman cruised to a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles, and Mirkovic got his second win of the day, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 3 singles.

John Ciraci pulled out a closely played first set and eventually won 7-6, 6-3 at No. 5 singles. Clouette was also a double winner, coming out on top in a 7-6, 6-1 decision at No. 6 singles.

Box score - McKendree 5, Hillsdale 4

Friday night, the Chargers fell behind McKendree University 3-0 after doubles play, and nearly pulled off a big comeback, eventually losing to the Bearcats 5-4 in a non-conference matchup.

Freshman Charlie Adams won a marathon match at No. 1 singles, winning the last two sets 7-5 and 7-6, eventually winning a 7-4 tiebreaker for the win.

Sophomore Justin Hyman was victorious at No. 2 singles by a much wider margin, 6-1, 6-1. Milan Mirkovic also dispatched his opponent quickly, winning 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3 singles.

Sophomore Jerry Hewitt earned a hard-fought win at No. 6 singles, also needing a tiebreaker in the second set, 7-6 (8-6).
