The first-place Hillsdale College men's basketball team will try to keep its lofty spot in the standings by playing in a pair of challenging venues this week, at Tiffin Thursday and at Ohio Dominican Saturday...Three teams sit behind Hillsdale in the G-MAC standings with one loss, but the Chargers have navigated the early part of their schedule successfully, posting wins over defending regular season champ Findlay and over Lake Erie, a team that features the leading scorer in the conference...The guiding light of that navigation has been defense...The Chargers lead the G-MAC in fewest points allowed per game (64.3) and lowest opponents' 3-point shooting percentage (.281)...Freshman forward Patrick Cartier was named G-MAC Player of the Week on Monday after a career-high 28-point performance in last weekend's win over Lake Erie...Cartier leads the G-MAC with a .664 shooting percentage this season, 82 points better than any other player...Thursday's game could be a low-scoring one, due to Hillsdale's stingy defense and a Tiffin defense than ranks 2nd in the conference in steals per gamer (8.47) and 3rd in blocked shots per game (3.27)...The Chargers have won 6 straight meetings with the Dragons, a streak that dates back to Feb. 6, 2014...Both of last year's meetings were decided by 7 points or less...Hillsdale is 3-3 vs. Ohio Dominican over the past six meetings between these programs, with the Panthers winning the last one, 68-55, on Feb. 23, 2019...Former Hillsdale assistant Dan Evans stepped down as ODU coach at the conclusion of the 2018-19 season to take the same position at North Georgia...Kelly Winter is in his first season leading the Panthers.
