Bio

A former star safety with Hillsdale College, Nick Galvan joined the Chargers as a safeties coach in February of 2017, and he's brought the same toughness and attention to detail he showed as a player to a new generation of Charger standouts at the position.

Now in his seventh season as a coach with Hillsdale, and his second as the program's special teams coordinator, Galvan remains hungry to add to a long tradition of impressive performances from the units he oversees at Hillsdale.

"Nick was a smart, tough player when he was here and he brings those same qualities with him as an assistant coach," Head Coach Otterbein said. "He had success as an assistant coach at Olivet, and I'm excited to see him help our defense."

A three-sport athlete and star at Adrian High School, just 45 minutes from the Hillsdale College campus, Galvan helped lead the Maples to three straight MHSAA playoff appearances in football, part of a string of seven straight appearances from 2005-2011.

He joined the Chargers in 2009 and stepped right into the starting lineup at safety as a true freshman, recording 69 tackles, three interceptions and 11 pass breakups for a team that qualified for the NCAA Division II playoffs for the first time in school history and advanced to the Midwest Regional semifinal.

Galvan only played in two games over the next two seasons due to multiple significant injuries, but he overcame those setbacks to finish his career with a bang as a senior, recording 65 tackles, three interceptions and his first career touchdown in 2012, while also earning Hillsdale’s Outstanding Defensive Back award and second-team All-GLIAC honors.

After graduating, Galvan served as JV coach and varsity wide receivers/secondary coach at Adrian Madison High School for the 2013 season. He then moved on to Olivet College where he was the secondary coach and equipment manager from 2014-16. He helped lead the Comet program to two conference titles, an NCAA Division III playoff appearance and coached three All-MIAA players in the secondary.

Since returning to Hillsdale, Galvan has made an immediate impact, coaching two All-Americans in Wyatt Batdorff and Drake Temple during his tenure.

Nick and his wife Becky, an alum of the Charger track and field program, reside in Hillsdale.
