Baseball Team Drops Season-Opening Doubleheader to Wayne State

Game 1 box score: Wayne State 7, Hillsdale 5

Game 2 box score: Wayne State 13, Hillsdale 1

Early deficits ended up being too much to overcome in both ends of Saturday's season-opening doubleheader by the Hillsdale College baseball team.

The Chargers lost both ends of the twinbill to Wayne State University 7-5 and 13-1 at TVA Credit Union Ballpark in Johnson City, Tennessee. The teams will wrap up their three-game series Sunday afternoon.

The Warriors held a 7-3 lead after 3 ½ innings in the opener and jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning of the second game. Charger pitcher Kolton Rominski did an excellent job in relief in game one, shutting out the Warriors over the final five innings of the contest, but the team could not complete a comeback.

Senior Steven Ring comes into the new season already Hillsdale's career leader in home runs and RBI. He put both of those records a little further out of reach with a big ballgame in the opener. He went 3-for-3 with a home run and 4 RBI for Hillsdale.

Ring was part of a productive top of the batting order for Hillsdale. Junior Jake Hoover, the team's leadoff hitter, went 2-for-4 with 3 runs scored, while senior Colin Boerst was 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Hoover homered in game two to represent the only run scored by the team.
