The Charger baseball team picked up three wins against an opponents it has struggled to win against in recent years.
Hillsdale took three out of four from Ashland University in a four-game weekend series in Ohio Friday and Saturday. The Chargers won both ends of Friday's doubleheader 8-6 and 16-2. The teams split their Saturday games, with Hillsdale taking the first 7-5 before falling 14-3 in the finale.
The Chargers are 10-13 overall and 3-5 in the GLIAC after this series.
Friday, Hillsdale enjoyed excellent performances from its pitching and hitting in a rare road sweep of the Eagles.
The Chargers rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh in game one for the win. Steven Ring and Ethan Wiskur each belted two doubles, and Michael Mitchell added a triple in the victory. Junior Will Kruse was the winning pitcher with seven strikeouts, and freshman Dante Toppi picked up his second save of the season.
In game two, Hillsdale outhit Ashland 18-5 and blew up for five runs in the second inning to grab a big early lead. Six different players had multi-hit games, led by a 3-for-5 day from junior Alex Walts.
Colin Boerst had a triple and scored three runs while Wiskur was 2-for-4 with 2 RBI. Chris Ackerman and Colin Hites each had doubles and Ring drove in three runs in the Chargers' most lopsided win of the season.
Freshman Kolton Rominski recorded his first career pitching win, going eight innings with seven strikeouts.
In Saturday's opener, Dylan Lottinville had the big blast with a three-run double in the fifth inning that gave Hillsdale the lead for good. It was his second double of the game.
Ryan O'Hearn and Colin Hites each had a hit and a run scored, while Colin Boerst was 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Wiskur was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two runs batted in.
Freshman Jeff Burch got the win, striking out a career-high seven in his five innings of work. Junior Phil Carey earned the save, allowing just one hit in two tidy innings of work.
Ashland scored six runs in the fourth inning of game two to break it open.
Steven Ring was 3-for-4 with a double and 2 RBI to lead the Charger offense in game two.
