Davis & Elkins College is a name Charger fans will start to get familiar with, starting next season when Hillsdale College joins the Great Midwest Athletic Conference.
Sunday afternoon, the two teams met in a non-conference doubleheader in West Virginia.
Thanks to come clean defense and excellent pitching from starters Will Kruse and Jeff Burch, Hillsdale put together its first doubleheader sweep of the season, defeating the Senators 6-1 and 4-0. The wins make the Chargers 5-8 on the season.
In the opener, Kruse was brilliant, throwing a complete-game shutout, allowing just five hits. Kruse retired 12 of the first 13 batters he faced and allowed a baserunner to advance to third base only twice.
In nine innings pitched, Kruse struck out four and allowed just one walk, improving his record to 2-1 on the season. He has 26 strikeouts and four walks in 24.1 innings pitched on the season.
Kruse got run support in the form of the long ball from sophomore Colin Boerst, who hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning to take advantage of baserunners who advanced via wild pitches. Boerst was 2-for-4 with 2 RBI and two runs scored.
Senior Ethan Wiskur was 2-for-5, and outfielder Michael Mitchell, who has been red hot lately, was 2-for-4 with a run scored.
In game two, Burch took the hill and put together his best outing of his young career. His first collegiate victory featured seven innings pitched with six strikeouts and just three hits allowed. A total of 56 of his 90 pitches were strikes, the kind of efficiency that is everything a coach could want from his starting pitcher.
Cleanup hitter Steven Ring was once again in the middle of much of the offense for Hillsdale. He was 2-for-3 with a double and 3 RBI. His double scored Boerst and Alex Walts to put Hillsdale up 3-0 in the third inning.
Boerst was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Dylan Lottinville added a pair of hits for the Chargers.
